Meaning as gift

Gifts come in so many sizes and forms- but all have the same basic idea that more is coming to you then mere property. The owning of the gift is then rather distinct fro the actually giving of that gift (the magic of Christmas is the very hidden nature of te parcels). Gifting and the ties it creates forms then an extra to being- a more than mere perception, and more than mere owning. t creates in this world of gifts an extra value: it forms or patterns meaning for itself and of its own.
To do so it places that to whom the gift is given in a certain position - call it if one must childhood : a place where the real world meets with a hidden order be it social, spiritual or scientific - an order the gift in giving conjures up and allows for- an order that ones given becomes a part of ones own mental funiture - or the way one understand how meaning is created and formed. This patterns are themselves rather complex: sometime mysterious, other times known but not articulated or articulable save in the giving at other open, known and merely to be respected in the giving (token presents). or at others a chance to re-throw an established relationship and make it sing afresh or perhaps just differently or even to signal a / the end.
No wonder gifts are so exciting- how else save i giving does the intangible actually exist in the moment of consubstaniaation - and living mystery - a moment always pregnant with possibility and worlds to come ---
No wonder then christmas holds it power in the mind in the absence of religion - it it quite literally carries it own ability to make and create meaning forward into the world.
